Bacterial infection?: In women, the most common cause of a fishy odor is bacterial vaginosis, a vaginal bacterial infection. Trimethylaminuria is a relatively common cause of a fishy odor in both men and women. The fishy odor is exuded from urine, sweat and one's breath. The cause is the absence (or low production of) of the FMO3 gene, that makes the enzyme that degrades trimethylamine from foods, thus the odor.
