I started the contraception pill mid way through or possibly just after i ovulated. am i still protected after 7 days or shall i wait a cycle?

You should be: protected 7 days after starting the pill but, in your case, at 16 years old, "should" isn't good enough. Please use a barrier contraceptive for the rest of this cycle. After that, you will receive the full benefit of using oral contraceptive pills.
