Bacterial vaginosis: ...is overgrowth of mostly normal vaginal bacteria. The cause(s) are unknown. STDs increase risk but most cases have no STD. Hygiene and underwear have nothing to do with it. BV is sexually transmitted between women but not heterosexually, but unprotected sex can trigger outbreaks, so condoms can help prevent it. Metronidozole (oral or vaginal) can help prevent it, or boric acid vaginal capsules.
