A member asked:

How long does it normally take for hpv to cause abnormal papsmear?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Depends on patient..: Most people with hpv are asymptomatic and do not develop warty lesions. Some people with hpv will develop abnormal cells (dysplasia / precancer) over time. This is unique for each patient and depends upon the strain of hpv & the patient's immune system. For an "average" patient with a functioning immune system, it generally takes at least 2 to 3 years to show serious cell changes.
