Common at first: Irregular bleeding or prolonged periods can be common in the first 1-3 months of birth control pills, and is more common if pills are missed. Usually after 3 months, periods get more regular and shorter. Other causes of long periods: fibroids, a uterine polyp, or other hormone problems (thyroid disease). See your doctor if it persists.
