Before ovulation: Intercourse 24 to 72 hours prior to ovulation will allow sperm to enter into the reproductive tract and wait for the egg to be released. This is in the optimal condition. Sperm has to wait in the reproductive track prior to ovulation and not vice versa.

Either: Since sperm generally lives in the reproductive tract for 3-4 days, it is ok to make love every other day around the time of ovulation. Most women will ovulate approximately 14 days from the length of their cycle. In other words, if you have a 28 day cycle, ovulation is day 14, 30 day cycle, ovulation is 16, etc. Making love every other day from 12-18 will cover you for a 26 to 32 day cycle.
