I have heard that some men like to have condom-free sex with a woman who is on her period. is this a bad idea?

Depends: Since pregnancy has been documented from unprotected sex during menses, it would depend on what your outlook is. It would be less likely in a woman with regular cycles than those who are irregular, but the risk is there. It is also a good risk for STD's if one partner is a carrier.
