It should not...: Masturbation will not cause blood in the urine or the urine to appear dark or red. It is possible that the skin on the tip of the penis could become irritated, perhaps enough to have a couple of red blood cells in a urine analysis. I would be more concerned about a urinary tract infection, or bladder or kidney issues.

My doctor said I had UTI symptoms and prescribed antibiotics without performing a urine culture. Should I be concerned?

Not necessarily: Generally, it is better to have a culture in order to identify the bacteria and ensure that it is sensitive to the antibiotic chosen. It is possible for non-infectious problems to cause symptoms similar to a uti. If the symptoms do not resolve after a course of antibiotics you should probably return for a urine culture prior to further treatment.

If I took indoethacin in my last weeks of pregnancy, should the fetal heart rate be monitored on a daily basis?

Dr. Nicholas Fogelson
Specializes in Gynecology
Depends: Indomethacin taken frequently over a long period of time can cause a transient change in the fetal heart circulation (in doctor speak it closes the ductus arteriosus). Small doses for only a few days, which is usually the only thing we would do, is not particularly dangerous. Check with your doctor on why you are taking it and whether monitoring is needed.

Whats it mean when a woman urinates blood and has sharp pains on the side above hips?

1 doctor answer1 doctor weighed in
Dr. Vance Harris

Many causes: The most common thing is a bladder infection but there are other causes like a kidney stone (should hurt) or something in the bladder like polyps or other growths. Some bladder conditions like interstitial cystitis can bleed. See a doctor for the right diagnosis as this could be something important. Always get sharp pain checked out as well. Thats our body telling us something is not right.
