What things affect sperm count?

Mainly physiology: Studies on lifestyle items including stress, seem to have only a 10 % effect on a man's baseline fertility. Genetics, anatomic, physiologic and hormonal issues appear to be the main factors influencing male fertility.

Many things: Sperm production is inhibited by high temperature (sauna, lap top on thighs), stress, varicoceles, and testosterone supplements (by indirect suppression of testicular function). Some men have genetic mutation in the y chromosome that impairs sperm production. Sperm motility is another critical factor in determining male fertility. A semen analysis can check both sperm count and motility.
