No one knows for sur: Many people find that masturbation relieves anxiety symptoms. Freud's theory was that anxiety was an expression of built up sexual tension which was relieved by sexual pleasure. Newer theories are that the intense experience is reassuring that one is alive and effective. In therapy that fact that masturbation helps can be used as a pathway to understanding the underlying causes of the anxiety.
