How soon after the injection is the depo-provera shot effective?

With your period: If you get your injection when your period starts it will be effective right away. If you for some reason get it at a different time in your cycle you should use back up contraception until your period comes. It will also be effective right away if received within 6 weeks of a pregnancy.
