The good and bad: Depo-provera shots for birth control, like any other birth control method, has its advantages and disadvantages. It is very effective in preventing pregnancy and convenient, but can also lead to mild weight gain, changes to one's menstrual cycle after stopping, and mood changes. Best to discuss all your options with your family doctor or gynecologist.

Very effective: Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) is a very effective form of birth control. "heavy" bleeding is rare, "extreme" bleeding very rare, although irregular bleeding or spotting is very common for the first 6 months or so until periods stop completely. Some women can report weight gain or vaginal dryness. Menstrual migraines, pms and cramping can be resolved by therapy. Greater than 99% effective in preventing pregnancy.
