Venereal disease: "vd" stands for "venereal disease, " derived from venus, the goddess of love. It's the term i grew up with, but it's been replaced by std, or "sexually transmitted disease" because the more colorful medical terms of the past are being replaced by terms that are boring but more politically correct. Stds are very common...How common depends on which std you're asking about, location, and population.
