See answer: Most common cause would be an infected hair follicle (aka folliculitis) caused by the bacteria staphylococcus aureus. Self-treatment includes avoiding irritation by clothing or shaving; moist heat compresses; proper hygiene with antiseptic cleanser; and topical antibiotic (mupirocin, neomycin, and bacitracin with polymyxin B). If no better in 2-4 days or worsens, an oral antibiotic may be needed
