A member asked:

Can hpv go away on its own like a cold & then its out/over? and how likely are you to get cancers or bad complications from hpv if you contract it?

Sort of: Your immune system should have the ability to fight off hpv and even reverse some of the cellular changes that can occur from hpv. However, hpv has a way of inserting its dna into your cells so that it's not recognizable to your immune system, so it can lie dormant forever there. Also, some individuals do not fight it off as well, for unknown reasons, and they go on to get complications.

Yes & no: HPV is a family of viruses well known for their ability to go into hibernation after clearing the primary infection.Of the 7 or so strains associated with cervical & other cancers, it is often decades before any evidence of cancerous change appear. That is why the vaccine is potentially helpful & why women should get their pap smears as directed. The percentage change to cancer is low, but worrisome
