No: While it is certainly possible to get a reaction from the over-the-counter treatments, genital warts are a sexually transmitted infection and warrant close medical observation. In general the over-the-counter treatments are not nearly as effective as either the prescription treatment or professional cryosurgery.
Dr. Nisha Chellam
Internal Medicine 31 years experience
Yes: In compliant patients self application of Podofilox as instructed twice a day for 3 consecutive days can be recommended. Exceptions are it cannot be used during pregnancy, it also should not be used for vaginal, uretheral warts and warts around the anus.
Dr. Barbara A Majeroni
Specializes in Family Medicine
No: Because the skin of the genitals is thinner and more sensitive than that on the hands or feet, using over-the-counter wart treatments is not recommended for genital warts.

A 26-year-old male asked:

How can i treat genital warts at home?

Dr. Robert Kwok

Only if doctor says: Only if one's doctor says a patient's genital warts are a good fit for home treatment shall such a patient get the caustic liquid to use at home. The liquid is carefully touched onto the top of the warts to burn them. The liquid is dangerous, and so the doctor often will not let patients use it on themselves. Each case is individualized because wart size, number, and location vary among people.
