A 22-year-old member asked:

what stds can they test for by blood?

Dr. Marcus Degraw

Many but not all: There are a lot of different types of stds. Some can be tested by blood and others will need either swabs or urine testing and still others are diagnosed by appearance and maybe even biopsy. Essentially, hiv, syphilis, and hepatitis b and c are the main infections diagnosed by blood testing. If you are concerned, you should get an exam, and other testing as necessary as well.

Some, not all : Some sexually transmitted diseases, such as syphilis, hepatitis & hiv, can be diagnosed by blood tests. Others such as gonorrhea & chlamydia require genital swabs. Check out http://www.Mayoclinic.Com/health/std-testing/id00047. Your family doc & planned parenthood can order/perform tests & offer appropriate treatment.

A 22-year-old female asked:

Can you test oral STDS through urine and blood?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. James Ferguson
Pediatrics 46 years experience
Not specifically: If you have acquired an oral STD,some may trigger antibody formation that is detectable in the blood. However, this would not tell where the STD entered the body. The urine would not provide any information beyond an STD acquired through the genitals. Oral STD's are verified by sampling /examining the oral cavity.
