A 20-year-old female asked:

irregular bleeding and spotting is common with depo, but just how much? i'm bleeding enough to fill over 2 tampons daily, should i be concerned?

No: This is not an unusual amount. If you are changing tampons every hour, that is not normal. Check with your provider if you are concerned!
Dr. Carla L. King

Not uncommon : Depo Provera (medroxyprogesterone) causes irregular menstrual bleeding. You can have heavy bleeding or no bleeding. If the bleeding increases or last for an extended period of time then return to your doctor for management.

Probably: You just need to take one of them. I tell patients that a centrum or one a day or two flintstones chewables are just as good as an super expensive, designer prenatal vitamin.

I'm 29 and have irregular periods. Currently i'm on day number 15. (i have 3 kids and a tubal) what's going on?!

Lots of options: The next step is a visit to the obgyn for an exam, sonogram and blood work. There are medications such as Lysteda which can help. Some will take birth control pills. A sonogram may show a polyp which can be removed. Others are candidates for an endometrial ablation. This is a safe easy option which can be done in a few minutes in the office. I am a fan of the genesys hta ablation.

A 36-year-old female asked:

Can you experience spotting with mirena (levonorgestrel) IUD even if you never have for the past 2 years?

Dr. Allison Urrutia
Obstetrics and Gynecology 14 years experience
Yes: Yes, it is possible to have spotting with a Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud even if you have not previously. While the Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud causes thinning of the uterine lining, it is still possible to have occasional spotting. Like all birth control, if you have changes in stress, weight or health, you can have changes in your bleeding.

Yes: Generally scans are read within 24 hours. If it is a emergency ct it should be read immediately to rule out a stroke or bleed. The scan may have been read and sent to your doctor who has the results.
