Not much : These are simply two different forms of the hormone progesterone. Clinically the differences for the person taking it are undetectable.

No longer available: Norplant (levonorgestrel) is not available anymore in the United States. There is a similar device called implanon. It is a thin, small cylindrical structure that is easily inserted under your skin. It lasts for three years. It has no estrogen in it. It is 99% effective. It can be associated with irregular bleeding.

Mirena (levonorgestrel): You shouldn't feel a mirena (levonorgestrel). Have the doctor do a ultrasound to check placement.

Varies: Everyone's tolerance is different - we take these out in the office after having patients take 800mg of Ibuprofen at home to help with cramping. Gentle traction usually allows for easy removal. Insertion may cause some pressure and even cramping. I have used a cervical anesthetic to help in some with a low tolerance for discomfort.

A 21-year-old female asked:

What does it mean to have one thread in mirena (levonorgestrel)?

Not usually a worry: The Mirena (levonorgestrel) iud does have 2 strings but many people cannot feel them when they are both there. When 1 is felt, the other one has probably folded up into the uterus and can be easily be brought down when it needs to be removed. The doctor can do that maneuver in the office when it needs to be taken out.
