US and PG test: Menstrual spotting is mostly abnormal for healthy women. As physician you need to get checked by ob/gyn to look for if pregnancy is there in productive age group and after ruling out the pregnancy then recommend ultrasound to rule out uterine problems like myoma or fibroid. The last possibility is hormonal abnormalities which can be regulated with birth control pills of 3 cycles.

May be normal: Periods can vary from month to month in their volume and duration of bleeding. I would say you may want to take a pregnancy test to make sure you are not pregnant. This is likely normal though. If your bleeding patterns continue to be different than what you are used to you may want to consult with your doctor to find out why.
