Viral tongue: Geographic tongue is related to candida albicans , a yeast. Viral infections of the tongue occur but don't look and behave like geographic tongue.

No: The cause is unknown. As it tends to run in families, there may be a genetic or familial link. Some suspect an alteration in the immune response as many patient who have psoriasis also have a geographic tongue. To my knowledge, there has been no link to virus as the cause.
