Many viruses: Geographic tongue (discolorations on the tongue) can be caused by many respiratory viruses. Check with your doctor if it doesn't resolve, or if it worsens.

Viral tongue: Geographic tongue is related to candida albicans , a yeast. Viral infections of the tongue occur but don't look and behave like geographic tongue.

No: The cause is unknown. As it tends to run in families, there may be a genetic or familial link. Some suspect an alteration in the immune response as many patient who have psoriasis also have a geographic tongue. To my knowledge, there has been no link to virus as the cause. No, not at this time: Geographic tongue appears to be a benign event of the top(Dorsum) of the tongue. In teaching or addressing tongue hygiene your scrapping or the use of the tooth brush to clean(debride) that surface of accumulated bio load. GT does not seem to respond to this type of care. It appears to be involved with a sloughing of the surface lining of the tongue and produces the look of outlined form .
