Both : Both. Ranitidine aka zantac (ranitidine) is a type 2 antihistamine. Normally histamine released is intended to bind with type 2 histamine receptors in stomach to stimulate acid secretion. Ranitidine competes with histamine for those receptors (think musical chairs) thereby reducing acid secretion. This inhibition is partial & temporary, lasting 4-12 hours, therefore dosing for children every 6-8 hours.
