No: Iritis caused by herpes virus is an immune reaction to the virus (particles called antigens) and does not require active viral infection. It starts with an initial infection, often at a young age, that can be very mild. The virus then lives dormant in nerve cells, and can reactivate triggering the immune reaction later in life.
