Depends : The life of the device is several years. Depending on the reason it was placed and condition of the patient at the end of device life, in some individuals the device may not be exchanged. In most though, the device will remain in place and will be exchanged once battery reaches end of its life.

Defibrillation: Not necessarily. The defibrillator can be explanted, but if it was placed for the right indication, shocking you from a deadly rythm this would not be recommended.
