Can be a problem: Gum tissue doesn't normally "peel off" but there are several disease processes in which that can occur. Autoimmune diseases in which your body makes antibodies against the layers of gums can cause them to separate and peel off. These can be asymptomatic or painful. They can be confined intraorally or be a problem throughout your body. An evaluation by your dentist and a biopsy might be required.
