Toe pain: Very unlikely unless there was some trauma involved. If there was trauma then it certainly may be or your may have sprain the ligaments around the joint.

Is it swollen?: Broken toes and bones in general are usually accompanied with swelling and black and blue. If your toe is painful with no other symptoms the diagnosis cannot be made without a history and exam.
