A member asked:

Is 5-10mg of melatonin safe for my 15 year old daughter to take on school nights for sleep?

Should be...: Melatonin helps to regulate sleep cycles. It is best taken 90 minutes before the desired time of sleep, and can be used every night until it becomes habit. Melatonin use should be accompanied by good sleep hygiene, which means sleeping and waking at the same times daily, a dark quiet bedroom, not eating or engaging in stimulating activities like video games within an hour of bedtime.

1-2 mg: The correct dose of melatonin is 1-2 mg, taken around 9 pm - which is when natural melatonin starts to rise. Start with the lowest dose. For some people the 3 mg dose can actually increase insomnia. Good sleep hygiene helps sleep - dark cool bedroom, no computers or tv after 9pm or so, no late exercise, for instance.
