Slings: Typically it is more ideal to elevate s limb after surgery. Although a sling can be tightened, ultimately the wrist is still lower than the heart which will lead to swelling.

No need: A sling is not needed. Just take it easy and give the hand a chance to heal.

Arm elevation: As part of the postop recovery protocol for most surgeons performing hand surgery patients are encouraged to elevate the hand above the heart. Slings often fail to achieve this because the arm is held low around the waist. At nighttime to elevate the hand is often recommended to sleep with the hand on top of several pillows. Swelling is water and water runs downhill. The heart is at the bottom.
