Blepharitis: Blepharitis, which is eyelid infection or inflammation, is commonly present. Bacteria colonize the edge of the lids and the base of the eyelashes. Overnight, when the bacterial by products accumulate and are not cleared by blinking, the eye may eventually become inflamed by morning. Sometimes this is aggravated by hot showers or soap. Cleaning the eyelids before bed and artificial tears may help.
