Many reasons: A very heavy workout can raise it, or it can warn on ongoing liver troubles from alcohol, lack of exercise, medication allergy, hepatitis b/c, wilson's, hemochromatosis, or a few others.

What does it mean to have high ALT score?

1 doctor answer3 doctors weighed in
Dr. Jeffrey Crespin
Gastroenterology 28 years experience
Inflammation: Alt is an enzyme produced by the liver. When it is elevated it signifies liver inflammation which can come from multiple causes, the aasld-american association of the study of liver disease considers a normal alt to 19 or less in a woman and 30 or less in a male. Alt numbers higher than this again means there is liver inflammation.
A 42-year-old member asked:

ALT?: Usually know. However very high triglycerides can lead to pancreatitis which can have abnormal liver function tests. Additionally, patients with fatty liver can have abnormal lft and some with high tgs.
A 39-year-old member asked:

Is it truly easier to take a full, deep breath of "fresh air" at high alt. Compared to sea level?

NO.: You will be able to take a deep breath about the same volume (vital capacity) at sea level or at high altitudes. However the oxygen content is lower at high altitudes, so you will actually be inhaling a lower o2 percentage. It may feel better, because it is cool and your looking at a beautiful, awe inspiring scene.
A 33-year-old member asked:

What is the cause of normal sgpt level found in cirrhosis?

Dr. Joel Gallant
Infectious Disease 36 years experience
Not unusual: It's not unusual to have normal liver enzyme levels when you have cirrhosis. These enzymes are elevated when there's is ongoing liver damage. Cirrhosis is scarring of the liver. If the damage to the liver has already been done, the levels may be normal.
A 34-year-old male asked:

My sgpt result is 366.00 u/l is that normal?

2 doctor answers4 doctors weighed in
Dr. Lawrence Judy
Internal Medicine 44 years experience
No: Sgpt is released from liver cells when something is injuring the cells. Chemicals such as alcohol or drugs, infections like viral hepatitis, or physical blockage from gallstones can elevate the test that high. Fat accumulation can also cause a rise in SGPT but not that high. Since you wouldn't know this number without blood testing, you and your doctor will figure out the cause and treatment.
