Lidocaine/steroid : An epidural injection usually includes a cortisone and a local anesthetic combines. However, i would take some time, and use of modalities other than surgery, using that option as a last resort. It may get better with time, physical therapy, analgesics, nsaids, muscle relaxants, acupuncture. If the back problem is affecting the nerves to extent muscle weakness occurring, surgical approach likely.

Steroids: Epidural steroid injections are typically a combination of drugs which usually include a local anesthetic (typically lidocaine) and a long acting and usually particulate form of cortiocosteroids such as kenalog (triamcinolone). The local anesthetic can relieve pain temporarily and the steroid serves to diminish inflammation and swelling around the targeted area.
