No: A shunt, or graft, is a piece of synthetic tubular material inserted under the skin that dialysis needles insert directly into. A fistula is a connection of your own artery to a vein. Needles are then placed into the vein when the wall thickness matures.

Shunt?: Shunts (s) are not used in dialysis patients any more. The first patients on hemodialysis used them for blood access, see image. Today, the term "shunt" is a term that is misused, as . An avgraft is below the skin of a patient and is made of synthetic material connecting an artery to a vein. An avfistula is the best access for dialysis and is formed by having an artery connected to a vein.
