Large platelets: The mpv is a measure of how large the platelet is. Large platelets are presumptively young platelets. If the platelets are being used up or destroyed rapidly (dic or itp) then younger platelets are released into the blood and this is reflected in an increase in the mpv. Also some hereditary platelet disorders cause high mpv.
