Not too hot: Atole is a popular mexican hot beverage, thickened with masa (corn) and flavored with cinnamon and brown sugar. As long as it is served warm, it should be fine.

Are babies born knowing how to hold their breath and swim?
3 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Adam Naddelman answered
Pediatrics 24 years experience
No: Babies are not born knowing how to swim. A baby can sometimes hold their breath as a reflex, but this should not be mistaken as an innate ability to swim. Water can be very dangerous for your baby: it takes a very short time for a baby to drown. It is extremely important that you carefully monitor your baby at all times whenever he or she is near water, and this includes the bath tub.

A member asked:
When do play groups become beneficial for babies?
2 doctor answers • 3 doctors weighed in

Dr. Natalie Hodge answered
Pediatrics 26 years experience
Not so much : Playgroups are not especially useful for development or socialization for babies less than a year of age. Playgroups are for parents to get together and share their new world of parenting. They are for forging new relationships with other families that are meaningful given the context of your changing family. Playgroups are helpful of course for stay at home moms, but dads are welcome to jump in!

A member asked:
Is structured play or free play better for babies?
3 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. Adam Naddelman answered
Pediatrics 24 years experience
Yes: Actually, a little bit of both is ideal for babies. Letting babies play freely with their toys or even common (safe) household items is a great way for them to explore and use their imagination. More structured play can help teach routines and can often provide great opportunities for socialization and shared experiences.

Yes: This often happens in the course of development when the babies are testing themselves and gaining movement. My own son was a backwards speed demon!

Do ultrasounds let doctors measure babies?
2 doctor answers • 6 doctors weighed in

Dr. David Fein answered
Specializes in Preventive Medicine
Yes: Ultrasound machines are invaluable in managing pregnancy today, especially high-risk pregnancies. Not only do we measure the baby's size (head, abdomen, thigh bone), but we can evaluate all of the internal organs, from brain to bladder. We also can make sure the house is in order -- evaluating the placenta and the amniotic fluid quality, even measuring the cervical length.
