.: Darkening of skin/tanning is a protective mechanism of the body. Increasing your melanocytes when you have increased sun exposure. If you don't want that better start applying sun block when out in sun and also try to decrease sun exposure.

Many causes: Skin darkening is primarily caused by sun exposure. Other factors causing darkening include certain drugs or antibiotics, hormones (ie: estrogen, birth control pills), pregnancy, hormonal disorder, photosentizers such as tretinoin, glycolic acid, chemical peels, resurfacing procedures, allergic reactions or rashes or eczema or irritation or rubbing of the skin.
