The cause of the: Dementia. Vascular dementia is caused by problems with the blood vessels in the brain, but alzheimer's is caused by the development of plaques in the brain. The course of the illness is also different. Vascular dementias progress in a stepwise fashion, while alzheimer's progresses in a slow, smooth way.
