See your doctor: Brown discharge is typically light bleeding. Irregular bleeding/brown discharge is common in the first 3 months of birth control pills, and can also occur if you miss pills. But, there are lots of causes of bleeding, including pregnancy, stds, other infections, polyps, or fibroids. You should discuss with your doctor.

Old blood: Your uterus is evacuating it's lining as well as the blood that comes from the shedding process. The blood has been collecting in the uterus and thus changes color - that's why it is brown and not bright red.

Birth control pills: Many women want to stop their periods early for a special trip. The only practical way to do this is to start a new pack of birth control pills early, in fact you can avoid the period all together by not taking the sugar pills at the end of the pack. You start oral contraceptives with the first day of you menses which will shorten you period but no guarantee about shortening it to only one day.
