Easy: The stomach is actually above the uterus, just under the rib cage. While intestines can sneak behind the uterus as it's growing, the stomach can still be examined. At the end of pregnancy it does get physiologically pushed up, as it were, thus increasing women's risk for dyspepsia and acid reflux, it is still capable of being examined. Hope that helps!

Need OB/GYN: When you are pregnant, the first visit often involves an exam called a 'bimanual exam' with one hand placed vaginally and one on the abdomen to get a sense of the size of the uterus. Later in pregnancy, we are just examining with hands on the abdomen. At the end of pregnancy, women often have exams vaginally to check for dilation of the cervix.
