Lidocaine 5%: 5% xylocaine (lidocaine) ointment is a topical anesthetic used on mucous membranes .It is used to lubricate endotracheal tubes. It can be used to numb the urethra before cystoscopy . Though it has an unpleasant taste, some use it in the mouth to relieve gum discomfort. It is not particularly effective on the skin.
