Respiration: When you exercise multiple physiological processes occur. You metabolize more thus producing more co2. Co2 is scrubbed from the blood by the lungs to eliminate it. Co2 is regulated very tightly and part of the issue is actually how fit you are - a cross country runner has a different co2 physiology than a couch potato or a smoker.
