A 37-year-old member asked:

What happens if i accidentally take 2 claritin (loratadine) d in one day?

It depends: There are two different doses of Claritin (loratadine) d - a twelve hour dose and a twenty four hour dose. Obviously, the 12 hour dose is recommended twice a day, 12 hours apart. If you were to take two 24 hour tablets, you would be getting the equivalent of 16 sudafed tablets. That could cause agitation, insomnia, rapid heart rate, and an elevation in blood pressure. That would not be recommended.

Recommended dose: The recommended dose is once a day. It is best to see a doctor if usual recommended doses are not helping. Often something different is required. Increased doses increase the risk of side effects.

Sometimes: While the usual dose of Claritin (loratadine) is 10 mg once a day, there are circumstances where allergists may use higher doses to treat persistent hives. Drowsiness in more likely to occur with higher than recommended doses of claritin, (loratadine) but in general, severe or significant side effects are unlikely.

Not necessarily: Many patients will experience relief of symptoms with Claritin (loratadine) d within 1.5 hours even with one dose. However, more continued doses will establish a steady state and perhaps provide even a little better relief.
