A member asked:

Is it possible to survive without scarring after having chickenpox?

Yes: Scarring is mostly caused by secondary infection of scratched chicken pox lesions. Preventing scratching will be the most effective way to allow the skin to heal well. The varicella vaccine is the best way to avoid getting chicken pox in the first place! all children should have 2 doses of the vaccine.

Possible: It may be possible to get through the chicken pox without scars. It probably depends on the severity of the pox and how the pox are handled, such as scratching, or possible infection. Scars, and how they appear, may not always be within the control of the afflicted individual. In other words, no matter what you do, one may still have scars.

Yes: If you can keep from scratching, your chances of scarring are much less. Consider using cool oatmeal baths to lessen itching or mittens to keep little hands from scratching. Your doctor can also prescribe medication to help with itching if it is severe. Your mother was right! don't pick at anything, even a pimple!
