That can happen: This is usually caused by infrequent (not regular) ovulation. The longer you go between periods, the thicker the uterine lining builds. So when you finally do have your menses it can be heavy and long. Birth control pills (BCPs) can be used to regulate your menses and decrease the amount of bleeding you have in a given period. You shouldn't go longer than 3 months without a period--not healthy
