Is it normal for morning basal body temp to drop 1 degree under 97, eight days before period is due, what causes that over a week before?

No: It is not normal for it to drop then. It usually drops 1-2 days prior to ovulation and if trying to conceive that is when you should have intercourse. . If it drops 8 days before your period is due maybe you are off on your days and you are ovulating then?
