Most types run their: Course. If you have a significantly sore throat w swollen tonsils / lymph nodes – see your medical provider & get a strep throat test & culture. Saltwater gargles are very helpful. Mix a teaspoon of salt in 8 oz of warm water – gargle with this several times a day. You can gargle with aloe vera juice a couple of times per day. A mixture of chamomile tea with honey & a small amount of lemon juice.

OTC meds: I would try choloseptic throat spray and cough syrup (such as Robitussin (guaifenesin) or nyquil). If no improvement, go see your regular doctor.

Depends on diagnosis: It depends on how long everything has been going on. There are numerous diagnosis for sore throat. Usually a pharyngitis is initially a viral infection and can turn into a bacterial infection. If you have been having this for a long time (months) maybe its allergies. You should be evaluated by a physician if it bothers you.
