how are people identified as colorblind?

Color blind?: See an ophthalmologist. There are ishihara (spelling>) cars that are used to identify color blindness.
Dr. Richard Bensinger

Various ways: Some self identify at an early age when they are unable to make the distinctions that their peers make. Others are picked up with school and occupational screening. Some of the more subtle color deficient persons never know about it all of their lives. Only a few occupations cannot be done by the color deficient like fruit graders, paint mixers, jewelers, etc. They can then be tested.

How can I pass the ishihara test if i'm colorblind?

You can't pass it: The ishihara test is a test for color blindness. If someone is truly color blind then the only way to pass the test is to cheat-get someone to tell you the correct answers. If color vision is needed for a job task then claiming to have color vision when you are really color blind could be dangerous.

How can I read traffic lights if I am colorblind?

Not an all or none: "color blind" is a common term that describes a collection of color vision variations in the population. You can have partial or total deficiencies, the most of which involve red-green.The undetected colors appear gray.My mild red-green deficiency was picked up on a pre college physical using ishihara plates & my dr encouraged me to avoid pathology. I've never had pbs with traffic lights.

How do I find out if I am colorblind?

Dr. Robert Kwok
Pediatrics 33 years experience
Do the Ishihara test: A person can determine if he is color blind by taking the ishihara test. This test consists of 38 circles of colored dots. Each of the circles of dots contains a hidden number made up of certain colors of dots. Depending on whether or not a person can read the number in the circles, his type of color blindness can be diagnosed. Parts of the ishihara test are posted on websites for people to use.

How things look to someone who is colorblind?

Dr. Michael Carson

Shades and Grays: Just like the old black and white film. Different colors are actually brighter/darker compared to each other. These shades let colorblind patients tell some differences, but a green and blue of the same hue will appear the same. Many phone cameras or computer photo programs can give a "black and white" effect, so play with this if you can and you'll see what they see.
A 24-year-old member asked:

To person who is colorblind and mixes up red and green, what would those two colors look like to them?

2 doctor answers9 doctors weighed in
Dr. Andrew Shatz
Ophthalmology 26 years experience
Shades of grey: It is hard to know exactly what a color blind patient perceives when looking at these colors, but most say they are shades of grey. Color blind individuals have a smaller pallette from which they perceive colors and do not know the entire range that we see. This makes it difficult for them to explain exactly what colors they do see.
