A member asked:

When the egg is fertilised what does progesterone do?

A doctor has provided 1 answer

Progesterone: Appears to decrease the maternal immune response to allow for the acceptance of the pregnancy, decreases contractility of the uterine smooth muscle, inhibits lactation during pregnancy. The fall in levels following delivery is one of the triggers for milk production. A drop in levels is possibly one step that facilitates onset of labor. Fetus metabolizes placental Progesterone to adrenal steroids.
