Variable: If there are no issues with the breast such as a fibrocystic nodularity, breast tenderness is usually a response to increasing estrogen levels. Women in their forties tend to be relatively Progesterone deficient, leading to imbalance between estrogen & Progesterone especially late in the menstrual cycle. This produces an estrogen dominant effect which may cause breast tenderness.
