Ovulation should: Occur 14 days before the first day of the next period.

Ovulation: Ovulation occurs 14 days after menses. Attempting unprotected intercourse 2 weeks after her period (~the 2nd of the month) would "sync" up with her egg being released from her ovary towards her uterus.
