Replacing oxygen: Carbon monoxide displaces oxygen from hemoglobin. If the intoxication is severe enough, damage occurs from the low oxygen level available to the body tissues. As an early sign the affected person's skin will show a cherry red appearance. You need to get out of a contaminated environment as soon as possible.
